Alfred Nobel was a Swedish engineer and inventor best known for creating dynamite. In the 19th century, he developed a stable form of the powerful but volatile nitroglycerin, making explosives safer and more practical. Despite his industrial success, Nobel had no heirs and chose to dedicate his wealth to establishing the Nobel Prize—an award honoring contributions “for the greatest benefit to humankind.”
