International Relations going from global order to global disorder

Dear Reader,

International relations are shifting from global order to global disorder. The results are uncertainty and changing power dynamics, creating new opportunities for emerging actors. In this second issue of the EPIS Report on International Relations & Diplomacy, we go beyond generalised narratives of global decline. Instead, we explore fresh approaches from students and young professionals with different backgrounds and areas of expertise. We work together as one report group and peer-review each other’s articles carefully, resulting in a report that reflects multiple perspectives. The diversity of our views and skillsets shapes this report.

This publication aims to provide a deeper understanding of how the current disruption of the global order and the transition towards disorder shape international relations. The articles in this report examine the varied effects of this disruption on international relations and diplomacy. They highlight different implications of global disorder. By combining different regional and thematic angles, the report seeks to encourage a more nuanced understanding of current global developments.

Is the global disorder we are currently experiencing really that unusual? Is it always something negative? What opportunities and threats occur from it in global rivalries? And what role do the United States, China, and the European Union play in all of this? These questions are explored throughout this report.

We hope this second edition of the report encourages critical reflection and contributes to informed debates on the complexities of global (dis)order in a rapidly changing world. In times of accelerating change, critical discussion and international dialogue remain more essential than ever.
