Hugo Grotius was a Dutch lawyer and scholar regarded as a founding father of international law. A child prodigy, he entered university at age 11 and later authored influential works in law and philosophy. His 1625 book On the Law of War and Peace, written during the Thirty Years’ War, laid out principles for just war and conduct in warfare—forming the basis of modern international legal frameworks.
